Mission
Friends of Liam Hayward is dedicated to defraying the costs of care for Liam Hayward and for providing education about vasa previa, the underlying and undetected medical condition that caused Liam's brain injury at the time of his birth.
About Liam
Liam Hayward was born to Liz and Steve Hayward on July 26, 2007. At birth, he lost over 50 percent of his blood and endured over 13 minutes of not breathing on his own. He was transferred to Cornell Medical Center for Cool Cap Treatment, a new procedure designed to minimize brain damage following oxygen loss.Miraculously, Liam fought through his critical first days of life and gained the strength necessary to endure a trip to China where he received a 20-day regimen of stem cell treatment. The treatment, not yet performed in the United States (and accordingly not covered by insurance), can potentially help a brain-injured child develop and recover lost functioning.
In the coming months, Liam will begin hyperbaric oxygen treatment, a procedure (also not covered by insurance) that is used to substantially increase oxygen flow within tissues to improve healing. Providing these treatments early in Liam's life gives his growing brain the best possible chance to heal.

About Vasa Previa
Vasa previa is a condition in which blood vessels within the placenta or the umbilical cord are trapped between the fetus and the opening to the birth canal, a situation that carries a high risk the fetus may die from hemorrhage due to a blood vessel tearing at the time the fetal membranes rupture or during labor and delivery. Another danger is lack of oxygen to the fetus.
Vasa previa may not be suspected until the fetal vessel rupture occurs. Reduction in fetal mortality depends on prenatal diagnosis. When vasa previa is found before labor, the baby has a much greater chance of surviving. Vasa previa can be detected during pregnancy as early as the 16th week of pregnancy with use of transvaginal sonography in combination with color Doppler.
